We chose the name of the chapter for the Niangua River of Dallas County, Missouri. The river was named by the Osage Indians long ago. Translated to English, it came to mean “Bug River” or “winding stream of many springs.” When white settlers came to this area of Missouri, they interpreted the word as they thought they had heard it, and as a result, it was spelled and pronounced in various ways. Old-timers of this area called it Meyongo, and the name was handed down through generations as the way the Osage referred to the river.
